I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

Today's Pithy Ponderment: On Asking the Question Rightly?

(Edited to make the latter questions open ended. Thanks to Brian Fulthorp for the suggestion. I have some very smart friends on social media!)

Instead of asking people "Do you believe in such and such?" what if we began by asking, "What is your understanding of such and such?"

For example,

Not- "Do you believe in Christianity?"
But- "What is your understanding of Christianity?"

Not- "Do you believe in Islam?"
But- "What is your understanding of Islam?"

Not- "Do you believe in climate change?"
But- "What is your understanding climate change?"

Not- "Do you believe in evolution?"
But- "What is your understanding of evolution?"

Not- "Do you believe in vaccine science?"
But- "What is your understanding of vaccine science?"

There are plenty of other examples one might give, but I've been wondering if this approach would lead to better and more constructive conversations.
