What Did Mary Know and When Did She Know It? (The Definitive Answer)

Every holiday season, the theological geeks among us engage in this by now tired out tradition of dissing the song "Mary Did You Know?" "Of course, Mary knew," many state with conviction. "Have you read "The Magnificat?" (Luke 1:46–55).

Well, the answer as we drill down into the lyrics is not so obvious. So, I intend to put this controversy to rest, once and for all (yeah, right). I post the lyrics below with my answers in parentheses.

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water? (no)
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters? (yes)
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new? (yes)
This child that you delivered, will soon deliver you (yes)

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man? (probably yes; Isaiah 42:7)
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will calm the storm with his hand? (no)

Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod? (no)
When you kiss your little baby
You kiss the face of God (no)

Mary, did you know? (yes and no)
Mary, did you know? (yes and no)
Mary, did you know? Did you know? (yes and no)
Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? (yes and no)
Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? (yes and no)
Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? (yes and no)

The blind will see, the deaf will hear (possibly)
The dead will live again (yes, but at the resurrection of the righteous)
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb (possibly)

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation? (no)
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day rule the nations? (yes)
Did you know that your baby boy
Is heaven's perfect Lamb? (perhaps)
That sleeping child you're holding is the great, I Am (she didn't know that)

Mary, did you know? (yes and no)
Mary, did you know? (yes and no)
Mary, did you know? (yes and no)

I end with my favorite version of the song from Pentatonix.
