I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

The Road to Freedom Requires Courage

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, "Go and tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his land." But Moses spoke to the Lord, "The Israelites have not listened to me; how then shall Pharaoh listen to me, poor speaker that I am?" Thus the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, and gave them orders regarding the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt, charging them to free the Israelites from the land of Egypt. (Exodus 6:10-13).

The people of Israel have been in slavery in Egypt. They have been slaves for so long that there is no one alive who remembers what it is like to be free. Your Egyptian taskmasters are harsh, generously using the whip to keep you moving as you toil from sunup to sundown building Pharaoh’s monuments—testaments to his power and his greatness—and to his exploitation of others.
