I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

Sunday Afternoon Poetry: “Sanctuary”

___
Holy hallowed halls
of respite,
a ceiling rising to
a crescendo
which gestures
tirelessly to
the God who is
above
yet around
yet underneath the
toes at which
we stare.
              God is here.
              God is there.

Rushing, warm wind
which pirouettes
up and down,
up and down
the aisles--
turn us,
we pray,
into something
full of Your
energy.
           God is excited.
           God is enthusiastic

Grand, maternal hand
rock us into
rest then
gently shake us,
bid us,
“Wake!
Come and see!”
Walk us like
small children through the
stained glass story
of forever.
            God is patient.
            God is kind.

Brother, dusty, glorified Brother,
shout joyful confidence,
challenge us to the
winning race,
teach us to grind
our soles
into the ground
and then
launch,
buoyant, into
a world arriving,
a world arrived.
            God is alive.
           Are we alive?
