I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

A Litany for Our Time

Gracious God, we ask that you would hear our prayers this day for the many needs in our world.

For leaders whose decisions affect real people in real times and real places. Lord in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

For children who live amidst the rubble of concrete and burned out homes and who cower in fear more than they laugh and play. Lord, in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

For mothers who cry because they can do nothing to alleviate the suffering of their children. Lord in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

For fathers who fight fruitlessly to protect their families against forces too powerful. Lord, in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

For orphans and widows who believe they are unwanted. Lord, in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

For the church that exists in places where faith is tested beyond what most of us can comprehend. Lord, in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

For the church that exists in places where faith is not challenged in dangerous ways allowing complacency to set it. Lord, in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

For the witness of the followers of Jesus, the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Lord, in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

Gracious Lord, may we your people hear and embrace the character of the kingdom that leads to our blessedness that the world might be blessed by you because of our faithful presence. Lord, in your mercy…
Hear our prayer.

We offer our petitions in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever, Amen.
