I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

Holy Saturday: A Great Silence

Leader: Today a great silence reigns on earth, a great silence and a great stillness. A great silence because the King is asleep.

People: The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began.

Leader: Jesus has gone to search for Adam and Eve, our first parents, as for lost sheep.

People: Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow Adam in his bonds and Eve, captive with him-- He who is both their God and the son of Eve.

All: "I am your God who for your sake have become your son... I order, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead.

Prayer: O God, Creator of heaven and earth-- Grant that, as the crucified body of your dear Son was laid in the tomb and rested on this holy Sabbath, so we may await with him the coming of the third day, and rise with him to newness of life; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
