With a neighbor in distress, one Utah man did what any concerned citizen would do.
"I threw on some clothes and grabbed my sword," Kent Hendrix told the Salt Lake Tribune.
A Samurai-wielding Latter Day Saints bishop and others in Millcreek, Utah, came to the aid of a woman who was being attacked and chased by a former co-worker, authorities say.
Hendrix was in the shower at approximately 7 a.m. on Tuesday when his teenage son alerted him about a woman's screams for help, ABC 4 in Utah reported. Hendrix, a fourth-degree black belt, put on some clothes — and grabbed the 29-inch steel samurai sword he has owned since he was 17.
"This is what I have for home defense," the Mormon told ABC. "So this is what I have at hand."
The sword intimidated the suspect, who fled in his car when Hendrix and other neighbors chased him away from the woman.
"I said: ‘Ha! I have your DNA and your license number. You are so done!’" Hendrix told the Tribune.
It's unclear if Hendrix actually struck the perpetrator with the sword. But the suspect, Grant Eggertsen, turned himself into the Salt Lake Unified Police Department later Tuesday morning. Eggertsen was jailed on multiple charges, including attempted burglary, trespassing and violating a stalking injunction.
"The victim did everything right," Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal told the Tribune. "Screaming, hollering for help, ultimately alerting neighbors who came to her aid. These neighbors did a great job helping the victim."
Especially Hendrix and his 29-inch sword.
"You train for years, and years, and years, and all of a sudden you're called to act — so you do," he told the Tribune.
