A real nice summary of the DSS. It would be good to find one in which a discussion over whether or not the Qumran was actually an Essene community or something else, like a pottery "factory" (BAR 32, 2006).

The DSS stand alone as witness to the the Hebrew Bible. Why and how they came to be in caves where they were found is open to investigation. Robert Cargill has some interesting observations about this.

Addendum to my response. The BAR issue referenced is 32:5 (Sept-Oct) 2006, 26-32.
