Scot McKnight has posted a review series on Rob Bell's book, Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived. It's been an excellent read and is generating much discussion over at Jesus Creed. Scot is well-suited to review this book for two reasons: First, he is a first-rate biblical scholar, and second, while Scot is not a pastor, he certainly has a pastor's heart in his concern for the church and for the faith walk of individual believers. I've probably received more help in thinking through my salvation theology as a result of this book and all its critiques than in seminary; so for that I thank Rob Bell (and people like McKnight). After reading the book I was left feeling like there were many unanswered holes. But instead of scholars like McKnight filling those holes, they more or less revealed that Bell's holes were more like trap doors. It's almost condescending to read how inaccurately Bell used Scripture and brushed aside major themes in the Christian faith
with
gimmicky
ways of
writing
to make it easier
to read
and make the reader
feel good about himself
that he read a whole book
in
a
day.
If his main goal was to get the conversation going, he succeeded; but that's about as far as he got with me.
