Thanks for posting this one Allan. Peggy seems to be bright, imaginative and capable of bringing a bit of sanity and reason to a debate that is well out of control.
You have an interesting standard for "great."
It is already known that many of the people who are coming to the town halls are acting according to Dick Armey's talking points. Dick Armey being paid by the health insurance industry. Noonan knows this and is being disingenuous.
Noonan also knows that an "enemies list" is not being compiled despite the accusation from the chair of the Senate Republicans' campaign committee. Who, by the way, was completely supportive of Bush's data mining that scooped up plenty of information about ordinary Americans and virtually nothing (to be generous) about actual terrorists.
When Peggy Noonan gets earnest is precisely the time to don your waders.
Creed:
So liberal protestors never use Democratic talking points? So when liberals organize protests it is a grass roots movement and good community organizing, but when conservatives do the same there is something manufactured about it. Your standard for legitimacy is skewed according to your own opinions. Those who hold different ones are suspect in their moral tone. How nice that the standard of right and wrong centers around your views.
And how do you know the White House is not compiling an enemies' list? Are you in the inner circle of the White House? I am not suggesting they are, but passing on emails to the White House of people who take issue with their health care proposals sure sounds like Chicago style politics to me. It will cause some ordinary Americans to think twice about writing an email on their views on health care if they think it will end up in Washington. Even if that is not true, Noonan is right-- it will have a chilling effect on free speech.
As far as Bush's data mining, I do not know what Noonan thought about that, but I did not support it; and that has nothing to do with what is going on now. I love the moral justification that says, "Well they did this, so we can do that."
As far as people being paid by the health insurance industry, if you want to play that game, I can list liberals who are being bought off by labor unions and pro-abortion groups. There is plenty of bribery to go around.
