My least favorite service was always the Midnight Mass on New Year's Eve with the local custom that Communion must be celebrated right at midnight. I publicly announced it as an opportunity to hear the worst and poorest prepared sermon of the year. Nevertheless, a hardy band of twenty or so always showed up and stayed late to "party." My first New Year as a retired rector is nearing and my goal is to have been sound asleep for several hours at midnight.

Neither, unless one of them falls on a Sunday. We have a midnight Communion on Christmas Eve.
