I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

The Quotable C.S. Lewis #4: What Pride Hath Wrought

"The Christians are right: it is Pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began. Other vices may sometimes bring people together: you may find good fellowship and jokes and friendliness among drunken people or unchaste people. But pride always means enmity-- it is enmity. And not only enmity between man and man, but enmity to God.

In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that-- and, therefore, know yourself as nothing in comparison-- you do not know God at all. As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you."

Allan,
Thanks for sharing C.S. Lewis with us. He is definately one of my favoirte theologians. There are so many quotes that you could do that would be so powerful, moving and challenging. God bless you brother and hope you have a great day!

Yes. One thing on my to do list before I die is to read all of Lewis' works. I've read some of them, and sometimes they're challenging for me to try to understand what he's getting at. But they're always rewarding. This quote is a good case in point.

Ted:

I have one of those kinds of to-do lists as well.

Whether I do it all before I die is another matter.
