I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

A Prayer for Reformation Sunday

Dear Lord, as we contemplate your gifts to the church, we stand in awe of those whom you have allowed to lead the church militant. As we set aside time to recall the activities of the past, we are thankful that through the dedicated zealous efforts of your servants you have preserved to us the wonderful gospel in its truth and purity. May the Holy Spirit not only bring to us the joy and peace of your love in Jesus, but may He also fire us with the unquenchable desire to share that love with others. May we never yield on one point of doctrine, lest we loose our Reformation heritage, our faith in Jesus, and have nothing to pass on to those who may follow us. We ask this in the name of Christ crucified and risen, the Savior of the world, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, throughout all eternity.
