We returned home this afternoon from New Orleans after a week of hard and fulfilling work. A total of nine persons from our church (including me) spent the week completely gutting houses-- taking out furniture and other items, removing sheet rock, ceiling, and flooring in order to prepare each house for renovation.
It was extremely hot and humid with the hottest day reaching 101 degrees f. The smell of the black mold and other odors in each house were almost overwhelming at times, even with protective masks. It was hard work and it was fulfilling work as we were being used to help families, in some small way, put their lives back together.
I will publish several posts over the next couple of weeks highlighting our experience and telling some personal and moving stories about the people we met. I will also post some pictures.
It is good to be back at home. I must now prepare for our Annual Conference this week.
