I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

Some Questions

If the ACLU ever discovers that "holiday" is just a run-on form of "holy day," will they want to ban that word from public discourse as well?

Isn't the term "secular" just a cover word for "pagan?"

If a church cancels services on Christmas Sunday, can it have any credibility in speaking about the centrality of Christ for Christmas?

Can anyone seriously think the media is not bias? Can reporters be bias and fair at the same time?

Is post-modernism post anything?

Has the Jesus Seminar lost its marbles?

If God has a purpose for each one of us, then why is it so many people seem to live accidental lives?

Why are Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday worship the most well attended services of the year, and Good Friday the least attended?

Is legalized gambling nothing other than the exploitation of the poor?

Are beauty contests nothing other than culturally acceptable sexism?

Is "The Jerry Springer Show" nothing other than culturally acceptable pornography?

Is "Reality TV" nothing other than culturally acceptable voyeurism?

Jesus said that life does not consist in the abundance of our possessions (Luke 12:15). What would he think of the shopping orgy the day after Thanksgiving?

When people refuse to volunteer in the church because, as they say, "I did my time," does that mean they believe church is synonymous with prison?

Why do human beings have such an uncanny knack for trivializing the momentous and complicating the obvious?

What would the late Guy Lombardo think of today's New Year's Eve celebrations?

What would the Prophet Amos say about municipalities using eminent domain to take people's modest homes in order to build more luxurious houses to increase tax revenue (Amos 5:11)?

What questions do you have? Please post them.

Some answers: ;)

Isn't the term "secular" just a cover word for "pagan?"

--Perhaps, although I think you know as much as me that the circumstances are very different case by case.

If a church cancels services on Christmas Sunday, can it have any credibility in speaking about the centrality of Christ for Christmas?

--Well, maybe in this case I think it's about what GIVES it that credibility. That helps me out in this situation.

Can anyone seriously think the media is not bias? Can reporters be bias and fair at the same time?

--Actually, I would say the problem is that the media is bias while trying to appear unbiased. What should happen is that reporters should give their opinions as much as possible, as opposed to trying to be a silent voice. The paper would be ever so much more fun to read if it were that way.

Is post-modernism post anything?

--Depends on which post-modernist you ask. ;) Seriously speaking, post-modernism started as a social critique and has turned into yet another threat of nihilism in society. Sad, you know?

Has the Jesus Seminar lost its marbles?

--I haven't read or heard of their latest stuff, so I'm not sure. They seem to be out of theological style, though. =/

If God has a purpose for each one of us, then why is it so many people seem to live accidental lives?

--Oh come on now, is that really a question or just rhetorical? ;)

Is legalized gambling nothing other than the exploitation of the poor?

--Actually, gambling is certainly more problematic than we often think, especially for churches. Think of how many churches run bingos. Seriously.

--As for Jerry Springer and Reality TV, I'd say that's probably about right.

--As for Jesus and Thanksgiving, I think he sees the point of feasts. ;)

My question is, what's your favourite Bible passage? I would be interested in hearing why. =)

I do not have one favorite passage in the Bible. I am particularly drawn to those passages that are considered high christological, such as Colossians 1:15-20.

It is quite an amazing thought to me that the God of the Universe, the God who hurled the planets into their orbits, and threw the stars into place, has come to us in the human flesh of Jesus Christ for our sake.

Quite incredible.
